The Musto Performance Skiff has been designed and developed with the following brief in mind – to produce an elegant yet simple dinghy with blistering performance that is highly enjoyable to sail.
Just ask any Musto Performance Skiff owner and they will confirm that the design brief has been achieved.
As with any true skiff the deck layout is extremely simple; this
leaves the sailor free to focus on sailing the boat. The superb Harken deck gear combined with the layout means all the controls work effortlessly and the sailor doesn’t get tangled up with complex systems.
Originally designed for the ISAF high performance single handed trials (which it dominated), the Musto Performance Skiff has developed into the World’s most popular ISAF international class of its type. Gone are the days when the average club sailors only considered the class suitable for professionals. Indeed it is these club sailors who are now the backbone of the fleet, in part due to the friendly class ethos and eagerness of the members to give new sailors a helping hand.
With fleets over 100 entries at major regattas the class has established itself on the international stage, with over 25 nations currently seen competing at World events.
There is an obvious challenge sailing by yourself and dealing with a spinnaker, but once you learn the technique it is easy to feel part of the boat in a similar way to windsurfing. The boat certainly has the thrills of a skiff downwind plus the downwind tactics of skiffs and upwind tactics of close one-design racing. It is a challenge learning but the capsizes are safe. Nothing dangerous like cartwheeling an 18 and flying through the air. Normally I have a laugh about it, dust myself off and get on with it.
I would encourage anyone who wants to rediscover the enjoyment of sailing to get into a Musto.
